Hi,
The issue with the Yamaha Studio Manager installer should be solved in the
next version of wine (0.9.32). Thx!

Ardour doesn't "start" with a specific sample rate. Rather, it uses the
sample rate of the current session (which it deduces form the source
samples used). Then, it tries to connect to jack, which -- of course
will be only successfull, if there is a jackd with the correct sample
rate currently running).
When Ardour starts up, it has not yet loaded any session and displays
some default values. Just ignore them and either:
- create a new session and specify the correct sample rate
- open an existing session-XML

Hermann Vosseler
PS: under some circumstances, Ardour is (was?) able to start up a
jack demon on its own. You will see this on the output of the terminal
you used to launch Ardour. Often this ist not what one would expect
and want....
Recently, a couple of blogs/sites have come to my attention all of which
address some of my personal trepidations regarding desktop Linux adoption
that have been growing inside my mind for some time now:
http://eugenia.blogsome.com/2006/12/20/the-slowdown-of-gnulinux/http://blogs.gnome.org/view/timj/2006/12/20/0
Now, while not all will care for Gnome and its current state, apparently KDE
does not fare much better either:
http://cogscanthink.blogsome.com/2006/12/21/not-even-one-line-of-code/
I know that many of you don't care for KDE either. Still, I hope you will
agree with me that this is a concerning trend nonetheless.
So, what does this really mean? I am not sure. It could be simply calm
before the storm (in a positive sense), or it could suggest that both
projects have lost corporate support and consequently vigor inherent to
well-supported initiatives. Yet, reading the comments does bring up some
interesting issues, many of which may very well redefine the future of Linux
as we know it.
So, what do others in the LAU community think? If this is really a
concerning trend, should we care? FWIW, I do care, as I do wish that Gnome
(my current DE of choice) was more refined in certain areas. I don't care so
much for adding customization options--I've used KDE for years and am
relieved to admit that endless hours of tweaking my desktop are now behind
me. Yet, there are still unrefined bits and pieces which stick out in
comparison with the rest of the DE experience, despite the fact that some of
them are purely cosmetic (i.e. dragging icons from menus and panels
introduces super-old icon representation with very kludge-like animation
which is very hard to associate with, while desktop icon
highlighting/dragging is very refined and precise).
Any thoughts?

Hi there,
The italian DJ and Developer Lucio Asnaghi has made a first preview of simple
host for native VST on Linux. Native VST for Linux was founded first by
Jorgen Aase /EnergyXT2, but the communication is problematic (also other devs
reported that Jorgen didn't anwer to any mail), so Lucio decided to make an
own host, based on the framework JUCE , because he porting a lot of VST
Synths to Linux. (he also made a great port from ZynAdd Windows VST back to
Linux VST)
It shall be released in March under an open licence. He will build up this
small host JOST (Jack hOST) to a instrumentrack with basic sequencer
functions. Later he will build up a full sequencer named "Juggler", which
should be near to the commercial Tracktion. (JUCE is the framework behind
Tracktion1)
You can download the first preview from the website of the autor.

The best native Linux VST plugins for testing JOST are the mdaSuite:

ProAudio for openSUSE Linux
Nobody took this news to this list!?
Microsoft was ruled to pay about a billion for infringing
a mp3 patent. When that is verified in higher courts, it
is expected that many companies will face the same issue.
I hope the bill for individual Windows users is high enough
so that OGG starts sounding a good idea.
Also, now it would be time to contact all possible mp3
manufacturers, and tell about OGG encoders and players.

I've got a sound card capable of 96 bits, ( M-Audio audiofile 24/96 )
but my sound editor, Audacity for Linux, only goes up to 32 bits.
Is there a sound editor for Linux that can do higher than 32 bits?
Hi!
I'm working on concepts for a new export dialog in Ardour.
I would like to hear of your needs regarding final mixdown
/export using any software, not just Ardour.
- Do you export once in the end, or do you do tests in
between?
- Do you work with stereo and/or multi-channel?
- What are your targets: CD, DVD, Web?
- File-types: WAV, Flac, Ogg, MP3?
- Bits and sampling rates you need?
- Do you or would you like to export to several formats at
once? If yes, which exactly?
- Do you know of outstanding solutions in any application?
- What problems do you run into?
- Wishlist items?
- If you use Jamin, do you feed it with multitrack material
or rather with mixdowns?
Cheers,
Thorsten Wilms
Hello All
I have an M-audio Audiophile 2496 and can happily route
my playback either to it's internal mixer (PCM Out) or
to SPDIF (SPDIF Out) using a command like aplay -Dplug:spdif myfile.wav.
What I can't do is set up the default output to be SPDIF so that players
like
flac123 play automatically to SPDIF. I've been routing throught the docs
now
and found the command I need for my .asoundrc
pcm.!default {
type plug
slave.pcm "spdif"
}
but this doesn't work and all the net examples are to do with dmix and
routing
to hardware that has spdif split out in it's driver.
Any help appreciated, I will then add the details to the wikis...

Hello Chris!
Thanks to you and your collegues for the steady development of rosegarden!
I have built and installed 1.5 last night (worked OK after finding out,
how to handle cmake - whithout lirc everything else default). The new
behavior and look of the matrixeditor is just great - I suspect you
heared me whining about it here on the list a few weeks ago ;-). Now the
matrixeditor is one of the best I know and at first glance it looks like
some cpu-load/graphics-issues that appeared in 1x before are gone also.
Yet there are some weired new bugs on my installation of RG also, that
hopefully can be solved easily.
1.) At startup RG 1.5 pops up kdialog-boxes, that say, that external
packages are missing, especialy it does not find Project Packager,
Lilypond and neither sox nor sndfile-utils.
Project Packager, sox and sndfile-utils are installed and can be called
from the comandline (e.g. they are being found by bash). I have moved my
old rosegardenrc with no effect in that matter.
2.) though I am no big fan of VST on linux I still like to check out,
how the progress is in that matter. I had VST-Support via DSSI about
year ago in Ubuntu Dapper with RG. Now in 1.5 the VST-plugs do not show
up in the synthmenu - have I missed something (VST_PATH is set...)
thanks again, see you
HZN
