One other aspect to consider: there is a good reason why the typical
'pro' microphone cable is about 5 times as thick and 25 times heavier
than anything that will fit in a mini-jack. There is just no space on
a laptop or on anything that can be inserted into a laptop for decent
connectors, nor are they mechanically fit to take the strain of even
a few meters of good mic cable.
