If all you need to do is record in the field, playback/monitor and minimal
editing, you might consider an HP iPAQ running Linux/Familiar and our
PDAudio-CF high-res digital audio interface card.  It'll record two channels
of 24/96 and has a stable ALSA driver.  It's the smallest high-res audio
recorder available today.
