Agreed...

I think the main problem is that it blends too much with the "sine 
rhodes" used in the comping. If the lead is lower in level it's 
completely absorbed by the comp. I guess the fix is to alter the 
character of the lead just enough to stand out from the comp and *then* 
follow your suggestion of lowering its level a bit...
