My general approach to upgrading is as following...<br>I run all my hard drives from esata, I have two drives...<br>One contains the system that I am currently using the other has the last system that I used or the system that I am currently testing, this way if things go badly and I need to get work done, I just boot from the other drive. But hey I agree with finishing the job before upgrading.<br>
<br>So far for me the 9.10 realtime kernel is the first one that really worked for me since the 8.04 kernel. It's quite good.<br>I am getting sick of the amount of work I need to do to get Ubuntu into a working audio workstation though. It's a pity (for me at least) that there doesn't seem to be any kde based audio centric distributions. (historically I would put that down to Arts less than cooperative).<br>

</div>I have successfully had twin Firepods running on Ubuntu 9.04 with<br>
the custom rt kernel. I was never able to have non-xrun recording<br>
otherwise.<br>

The only hardware that seems critical is the firewire chipset. The<br>
TI chipset seems to work fine, other not so much.<br>

I don't have an opinion on the cpu or mobo, have used both intel<br>
and amd. (googling "don't use this particular model#" in this application<br>
is always a good idea.)<br>

I have not attempted 9.10 (either vanilla or Ubuntu Studio) I'm in<br>
the middle of a big mastering job and don't have time to fool with<br>
the "oh, well build this and tweak that stuff that always seems to<br>
result when changing things.<br>
