i recently tried using patchage to connect the zynsubfx and yoshimi
synths to rosegarden. both synths show in patchage with different
ports to usual, and i'm not sure what to do with them. the usual setup
is:
blue: audio
green: midi (alsa midi i think?)
both the above synths have a red input port. what is this - is it jack
midi? how do i work with it?
The only "input" those synths will have will be the midi input port.
Sounds like red would be the colour. Whether it's jack midi or alsa
midi will depend on a) what default was chosen on build, or b) which
option was selected via command line parameter.

or is there any documentation for patchage, i can't find anything?
Can't help you there, looks like you're in for the "kneebone connected to the
thighbone" discovery method - connect things and see what happens!
