You never 'need' it. You may need level/volume controls, but mixing
those up with connection management doesn't make any sense from an
operational point of view.

I'm old enough to have worked in environments (like a broadcast
center) with thousands of analog audio connections (between
studios, transmitters, OB-vans,...). Extreme care was taken to
ensure that every connection was absolute completely transparent
and level-neutral. It's the only way to remain sane if you are
doing anything above trivial level. Thank $(GOD) all of this is
digital today.
