Ah, no, I misunderstood you, when you were talking about /dev/dsp.
/dev/dsp is very near to the soundcard. You don't play music
on it, you play ones and zeroes. 

What you want to do, does not require this low level. I would really
recommend Pd (and using the "fiddle" external), or something like
jMax, Spiral Synth Modular or similar.

I'd recommend to look for something high level instead. Like jMax or
Pd, but I'm repeating myself. ;)
