OSS applications run via alsa-emulation on the onboard via82xx here,
and the alsa driver doesn't work with 2 periods ('blocks' in Mx4
talk).

switching to the ice1712 device or to 4 periods makes Mx4 work like a
charm. nice, clear sound indeed, sorry about any worries i may have
caused.

(hint) this wouldn't have happened with a jackified Mx4 ...
