Amen! 
So as a sophisticated host the least thing you could try to do if you
find a plugin violating 1.2's specs is try to use it as a valid 1.1/1.0
plugin instead of simply rejecting it. 
Since Fons' proposal is only an add-on for 1.1 this shouldn't be a
problem.
