Well, I have a few ideas about what to do with it next. I'd like to 
keep it as portable as possible, but that doesn't mean it can't 
support serious APIs on serious platforms. :-)

Hmm... I would have thought SDL should fail if it can't open an audio 
device. If it doesn't, there isn't much I can do, short of bypassing 
SDL audio entirely. (As in, using JACK instead. :-)
