just ftr, the event box tweak to improve redrawing while tab switching
was suggested by Torben Hohn on the phat-dev list. i was kinda
sceptical but then Damon Chaplin applied it to phasex and verified
that is does indeed improve performance.  

blame where it's due and all :)
