Low end embedded CPUs don't have a MMU so they run ucLinux instead of
full Linux. It is difficult to program on these systems and you will
need a JTAG. Probably not good for a first embedded system.

Efika is a much easier system to get started on.

It is $99.

Based on the Freescale MPC5200B - PowerPC with MMU and FPU.
There is AC97 audio on the board.
It has a PCI slot so that you can add a video card or build your own
audio hardware.

You have to provide a standard PC power supply. Any old one will do,
the Ekifa needs hardly any power.

For $300 there is a version in a case with power supply and video
card. It is very small and silent. It's $300 because it uses an
expensive power supply that is fanless.

Google around for Ekifa, lots of hackers have made mods to them.
