Ok, so there it is on your distribution. I've never seen /etc/alsa/*
before.
Try commenting out the two !default settings, kill pulseaudio,
then pulseaudio should be out of the way.
And, as you said that it's a fresh install - did you unmute your
card(s)? They should be muted after initial configuration.
Because actually pulseaudio should work too...
