IIRC the default GTK+ is indeed Clearlooks. 
It is an Nvidia X driver running.

There is an Intel framebuffer builtin into the chipset. You say that I
should try that and check if I can still follow the right to left
drawing order of gnome-volume-control, or else shut up?
