M-Audio MidiSport's firmware is closed source and proprietary. Hard to debug 
if the problem is here.

OTOH, there was a GPL firmware for the MidiSport 2x2 and equivalent devices 
(ezusbmidi). It has been abandoned, with the indiference of the Linux audio 
community, but the sources should be somewhere in the attic.
