Well, of course there are two quite separate things here: sound
output from Rosegarden, and sound input from the Evolution. Your
last paragraph seems to suggest that you get no sound output even
if you are playing things that were composed manually in Rosegarden
(i.e. the Evolution is not actually involved). Is that so? If it
is, then I suggest looking at that problem first and worrying about
the Evolution afterwards.

The small VU meter only indicates that Rosegarden is attempting to
play a note, it says nothing about the actual state of MIDI output
at the driver level. i.e. the note can be being routed to nowhere
and Rosegarden wouldn't know anything about it. What MIDI output
device (synth etc) are you trying to play to? What devices does it
show as available for output? (If you click and hold on one of the
labels at the left end of a track, it will show you a dropdown of
devices and instruments -- you may find you're simply playing to a
device with nothing connected.)

As for MIDI input, the transport window (Settings | Show Transport)
has an extra panel at the bottom that shows MIDI events coming in
and out. You can get to that panel by clicking the arrow toggle
button at the bottom-left of the transport. It should show an IN
event for each keypress when correctly configured.

If you're using the 0.8.5 release, it's worth knowing that the way
devices are reported and configured in Rosegarden has changed
somewhat since then, in a way that is IMHO somewhat clearer than
it was and easier to configure and troubleshoot (though it still
needs some work at the moment). We're a little late with a new
release, but one should be coming out within the next couple of
weeks. It's been a while since 0.8.5 so I'm having a bit of
trouble remembering exactly which features are in it and which
aren't; the keen user who enjoys compiling stuff (!) might prefer
to track the CVS version until the next release is out.
