Linux 2.4.19 + lowlatency
Soyo TISU P-III 1.3GHz
Audiophile 2496 using RCA SPDIF
Alsa 0.9.0rc7

i followed the advice on Planet CCRMA.

i can monitor the SPDIF In. It works about 80% of the time. The
other 20% is silence and clicks. This result is in single user
mode on console. i have the card alone on IRQ 9 and nothing
else is sharing IRQ 9 (see attached lspci & dmesg output).

joshua at almost:~$ cat /proc/interrupts
           CPU0
  0: 20847 XT-PIC timer
  1: 143 XT-PIC keyboard
  2: 0 XT-PIC cascade
  5: 0 XT-PIC usb-uhci
  8: 1 XT-PIC rtc
  9: 0 XT-PIC ICE1712
 11: 384 XT-PIC usb-uhci, eth0
 12: 25 XT-PIC PS/2 Mouse
 14: 4794 XT-PIC ide0
 15: 4 XT-PIC ide1
NMI: 0
ERR: 1

Turning on low-latency doesn't make any difference:

joshua at almost:~$ cat /proc/sys/kernel/lowlatency
1

(i tried the same setup on my SMP motherboard. It doesn't work
at all. 95% of the sound is lost. The Audiophile seems extremely
sensitive to hardware.)

i'm wondering if i have a defective Audiophile card? Any idea?
