Thanks for the complement, but wow is it old.

But the point still stands that your best bet for a good
home studio is either an ice1712 based card, e.g.
the M-audio Delta series,  or one of the RME cards.

there are now some interesting usb devices that are reported
to work but I don't know anything else.

Before buying anything, I'd search teh ALSA list archives
and the linux-audio-user archives for reports of success or trouble 
with the card you're interested in.

Note that the ice1712 cards are all a little different...
some work easily out-of-the-box, some have given people trouble.
And some versions of ALSA have been more or less broken with
these cards. Get the latest ALSA, maybe even from CVS.
