well
a newbie here is struggling @ slackware on Gateway2000 SOLO 2100
(a PentiumMMX 150Mhz with 48MB-RAM machine)

is there a good site
that someone doing sound things with this machine is running?

after a basic "promt-mode-only" install of slack8.1
tried a mpg123 thing @ root
but it hit me with a
cannot open /dev/dsp message

so i thought re-configuring the kernel was something
i cannot run away from

the spcecification sheet that came with this secoond hand machine
says that the machine has ESS's ES1888 chip on it
but after installing windoze95
that system seems recognize the chip as ES1688
(and the sound aspect is doing ok without changing anything)
yes the cd-rom 4 driver installation is also here
but its instruction doc tells me to choose ES1688
hah
but i tried the ES1888 driver install
and the result is also not bad

now then

a driver for which
is the one i should choose @ slackware?
could find some ESS related check box at
make menuconfig
but
some people warned me
that
the default (?) SoundBlaster compatible might be enough

so

it'd not the kernel related thing
but some modprobe or setting files preparing oriented something
that i'm missing over here?

PS.
my plan on this prompt mode machine
to run
csound and jsyn only
jsyn requires portaudio
but if talking about the kernel
OSS might be enough?
