You might want to read this article:

Don't mind the first part, the second section is what you want to read. 
Follow the pointers to the various other articles, you'll be burning CDs 
like a pro in no time.

Most Linux distros accomodate IDE drives by emulating SCSI. What 
distribution are you using ?

Run this command (as root) to see how your system identifies your CD-RW:

    cdrecord -scanbus
