If you only care about spdif you may as well go for one of the maudio
cards - which are as well supported as the RMEs, but dont make you pay for
all the additional i/os you dont want.

I used a audiophile 2496 briefly a few years ago and it seemed to work
well under ALSA:

check with a current owner though.

I'd steer clear of USB devices (they seem to be problemnatic on the whole)
and theres no supported firewire devices that I know of.
