Maybe not the whole kernel. I do't know how SusE does this, but you
might get away with just recompiling your ALSA modules.

Yes, arecord is the reference. If arecord doesn't work, probably
nothing else wiill work. But the perfect (command line) tool for
recording is ecasound!
