That article isn't germane, really. It refers to binary-only software built
in a "everything fits all" manner (Windows, Adobe, etc) from Pentium II to
AMD Athlon64 hardware. Its language is also laced with subjective
descriptors "feels", "seems", etc.

In my own tests which measure client/server turn-arounds with SSL handshakes
(via localhost), pattern-matching against 240GB spam corpora, etc, I've
confirmed that the Athlons run "legacy" code (i.e., code targetting for
generic 486 execution) faster than P4s. When you control your environment,
as most Linux system administrators do, you can retarget your kernel and
applications to optimise accordingly.

I've said as much in prior emails.

I will admit a lack of experience with these Athlon64 CPUs, however. I
don't have any of them.

Identically clocked Athlons run 15-20C hotter than my P4-Northwoods in
identical rackmount profiles and cooling strategies.

I only have one Prescott (3.2GHz) P4, so there aren't enough data points
with that family. It's warmer than the Northwoods.

As always, YMMV.
