i've been using this:
dd if=/dev/snd/midiC0D0 bs=1

And if i play the keys i get every midi message displayed on the console. But 
this depeneds on your setup because it can also be /dev/snd/midiC0D1 .... ?

Try the presets from the current CVS of zyn, there are really great sounds in 
there!

You should also check the Alsa Modular Synth ;-)
