You need to use JACK - see Jackd, Jackstart and qjackctl - the latter is a 
nice GUI version, which takes a lot of the headscratching out of it. Your 
softsynth needs to be Jack-aware (I don't know RTsynth - Fluidsynth / qsynth 
is a good standard starting point) It should then turn up in the Manage MIDI 
Devices dialog and you should get some sound.
