And here's the crux of the biscuit!

You'll also be wanting microphone pre-amplification.  I have a Behringer
mixer (16inx4out) that I consider crucial to the recording process.  I
like the preamps on the 8 mic channels.  

I have a lot more, but could just live with that!  lol
