arecordmidi has a --dump option, too (you need the alsa-utils-1.0.5rc1
package for this).

This is OK.  The velocity can have values from 01 to 7F.

8x = note off, Ex = pitch bend, F8 = clock

Are there any other messages at the beginning of the demo song?

Does the drum pad send any messages when it's switched on?
