The INSTALL instructions are not very clear.  Trying to follow them,
it doesn't build on my Debian woody system...

 $ make check
make: *** No rule to make target `check'.  Stop.
 $ make prefix=/INSTALL/fmit configure
make: *** No rule to make target `configure'.  Stop.
