Hi Mike. You may have a jumper on your mobo to disable the onboard soundcard. 
I use an Audigy2 soundblaster card and disabling the onboard sound by means 
of the jumper on the board got things going ok. You'll probably need the 
manual for the mobo to see where it actually is. All the best. Nigel.
