That should have been all you needed to get it working.  If you're jsut
trying to play an external MIDI module JACK does not need to be running.

Yes, precisely what I am trying to do...

I guess you'll have to reinstall Ubuntu.

Was afraid you'd say that...here goes months of doing the minimal install
and painstakingly adding bits and pieces and struggling to get it all
working...arrrg!
