using an equalizer, could be very helpful too ...
for me equaliser + reverb is a very good starting for
voices,
if you sing hard, the compressor is good,
it's easier to use a compressor than playing with the
distance and orientation of the micro, 
even if someones say that's better to don't use any
compressor for recording,
