Of course listening to some speaker yourself is the only way to really
find out what suits you. The ~500$ range of speakers is very
competitive. There are a lot of models to choose, so you may have to
do a lot of hearing. Personally I chose the Tapco S-8 [1], because I
also like to hear the low end clearly. I like these speakers a lot
now, that I have them for about one year. However actually they may even
be a bit too big for my room, maybe the S-6 would have been
sufficient, as well. ;) 
Other nice speakers in that range include the Event line, the 
KRK Rokit speakers, Fostex etc.
