How does the system perform when running from a bootable
CD/floppy?  You might be able to isolate between hardware &
software by trying things like this.

Been there, feel for ya.  It took me forever to determine that my
consumer grade motherboard was too old for server grade/size RAM.
One year newer and the mobo would have been fine.
