I have a PMA430 Archos and I'm using it to make small field
recordings. It is fairly good to use in the field but not as good as a
small tape recorder. It takes about 10-20 seconds to be up and running
for recording. And that is not the recording it self but the handling
of the software, clicking on the screen and so fourth. I consider it
not to be affordable for just that. But that is the PMA430, so other
models might get you more value audio function per $. The PMA430 is
much more than just audio. I bought it for about 6500 Swedish
kronor. That is something like $850 or 700EUR.
