Great text, cool indeed ;-)

But I have a very different approach to the concept of coolness - to me
it means exactly the opposite of the customs of the "cool kids", you
describe.

To be cool means not to depend on conventions and expectations and most
of all verdicts of any type of cultural defined group.
(To be civilized, polite, respectful towards others is a different
matter - one can be independent whithout answering "fuck you" if somone
says "good morning")
I come from the Metal-Scene and I never had the slightest problem with
telling everybody, that I like some depeche mode recordings and that I
admire the Work of Tom Waits and Glenn Gould and that I am a huge fan of
PJ Harvey and anybody, who dared to critcize me, because I like stuff
that is not "approved" as Metal I consider being as uncool as my
Electronics-Teacher back in the communist East-Germany.

Being not much more then a obeying member of a group is as uncool as I
can think of.

Regarding your thoughts of free software and its impact on the artistic
process and attitude I completely agree with you - free art - free music
- - free software.
