OSS was the old sound system used before ALSA, it's incompatible with
ALSA.

Your distro's init scripts would not do this on their own, unless it's a
truly ancient distro.  Probably someone added "uart401" to the list of
modules loaded in a misguided attempt to get MIDI working.
