Thanks for the reply. It turned out to be a misspelled command... I
was simply using speaker-test -c 4 on the default alsa device, but I
had to specifically say I wanted the surround40 one, like so:

speaker-test -D pcm.surround40 -c 4 wav

And it worked wonderfully.
