The core of vmware s a closed binary - the modules to connect this
binary to the the Linux-Kernel are open source with proprietary licence
(a bit like known from Steinbergs VST-SDK).

As i mentioned, that with my UBUNTU-Realtimekernel these modules built
OK i forgot something important:

As with the most kernels, that are not officially supported by VMWare
you need to apply a little script to the sources of your Kernel:

PLUS:

i test both the Desktopperformance and the audiocapabilities of the
UBUNTU-RT-Kernel daily and i am quite enthusiastic about and look
eagerly forward the official release of dapper drake.

In my experience audiooptimizations do not degrade the overall
performance at all and to have KDE, Open Office and TEX installed does
not bother audio (well - as long as you do not compile a KritaCVS while
mastering a 28-Track-ardoursession with jamin ;-))
