This sounds like you have two dmix-devices, one called "dmix" and the
other is the "default" device, that aplay is using when you don't
specify a different one.

Current version of ALSA don't require you to do any definitions for
getting dmix to work, the "default" device already is dmix'ed and
dsnoop'ed. 

I would suggest you remove your /etc/asound.conf and any ~/.asoundrc's
and try again, this time using "mplayer -ao alsa:device=default" and
"aplay whatever.wav".
