and on osx10.3.9+xcode1.5
pkg-config was too old so i installed
pkg-config-0.22.tar.gz

but ./configure for rubber became the same as that of
what i got @ slackintosh

Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you
installed software in a non-standard prefix.

Alternatively, you may set the environment variables SRC_CFLAGS
and SRC_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config.
