You should check, in the kernel configuration, under Device Drivers --> 
Graphics Support, that you've checked "support for frame buffer devices" and 
then select your kind of videocard (or vesa or both). Alternatively, you can 
edit /etc/lilo.conf and select "vga=normal", I think
