Don't underestimate the power of a productive Sunday afternoon with  
pd/gem and a good swab of open/freely shared models .. maybe some  
wine or so too .. ;)

Once you get the basics of whats involved in a PD model, it sorta  
turns outward on itself.. a working pd/gem rig can be a really nice  
fully-customised music system that works precisely the way you (the  
user) have described it.  In that regard, it is worth a little  
effort, like any good instrument too.
