The standard 4-string bass (either guitar or upright) is tuned *one*
octave lower than each of the bottom four strings on a guitar,
(i.e. E-A-D-G).

Five and six string basses usually have a low B string tuned a fourth
lower than the low E: B-E-A-D-G or B-E-A-D-G-C.
