Aaarrrggh ! Not true. Wrong bass makes me want to scream. 

My way to test bass players is to have them listen to 
"A remark you made" by Weather Report, and request them
to play the right bass to Zawinul's haunting synth line
starting at 00:52. Very few of them find the right notes.
