Y'know, I have an nvidia card, and I haven't bothered with the special
nVidia drivers in a long time.  I guess I lose 3D, but it doesn't seem
important to me in the studio - I use the nv driver that comes with 
Xorg.

I think if you want the official driver, your approach seems fine.
