A program called VeeJay was quite good, and also Gephex. Look for Linux VJ programs, I'm sure some can be MIDI controlled, and usually play video, add effects as well as stills. Sorry I cant narrow it down better (I'm a sound engineer, not a VJ), but you may not have considered this type of app yet and you could be lucky.
