Generally speaking: increase the latency. More time for audio-processing means 
more time for context-switches (=app-switches). And less context-switches per 
second, as you run with bigger buffers.

If you can't do that because you then play with high latency, try to record 
the midi while playing a lo-fi soundfont that is easy on cpu. Then play the 
recorded midi with the high-quality soundfonts...
