I would try it, listen and decide.

The other possibilty - if the guitarist has a guitar amp and you have a 
spare microphone you could mic the guitar amp.  Many guitarists like 
this approach anyway because they chose a guitar and amp that sound 
good together and that's the sound they would like to hear recorded (or 
amplified further for FOH).
