I can see you've got plenty to think about but ...

when making range selections as Stephen and Hartmut described,
be aware of the snap-to-grid setting.
set to grid-off for very fine selection tuning, switching between zoom 
tool and select tool to tweak the ends of the selection. ( the selection 
is not lost when you switch to zoom and back. not in 2.5 anyway.)

if you are using a click or drum-machine track:

enable the tempo and meter rulers (above the tracks area ) and 
right-click on the markers to edit them.
you can now use the snap-to-grid to make rhythmically accurate edits 
down to small fractions of a beat.

hope this helps. Ardour is a featureful program with an initial learning 
curve, but its well worth the effort.
